Radio Free Europe Reveals Al-Qaeda’s Growing Activities in Afghanistan, Links to Terror Attacks in Pakistan

International media outlet Radio Free Europe has reported important details about the growing activities of Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and its alleged links with terrorist attacks in Pakistan.

According to Radio Free Europe, the relationship between the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Al-Qaeda has become stronger since the Afghan Taliban returned to power. The growing cooperation has reportedly increased the TTP’s ability to carry out attacks.

Radio Free Europe said there is evidence that Al-Qaeda has supported TTP attacks against Pakistan from Afghan territory. A December 2025 UN report described Al-Qaeda as providing training, advice and logistical support to militant groups operating in Afghanistan.

According to the report, Al-Qaeda has also helped shape the TTP’s strategy, propaganda and training capabilities, strengthening its ability to carry out attacks against Pakistan.

Radio Free Europe reported that in April 2026, Al-Qaeda’s media wing, Al-Sahab Media, openly supported TTP operations against Pakistan for the first time.

An August 2026 UN report also said that Al-Qaeda’s guidance, training and support for the TTP had developed into more open support.

Radio Free Europe further reported that Al-Qaeda has been trying since 2020 to persuade the TTP to join Al-Qaeda and end its separate organisational identity. The report said this effort may have received support from the Afghan Taliban.

The report also alleged that Afghan Taliban authorities provided members of the TTP, Al-Qaeda and Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) with housing, financial support and local identity documents.

According to Radio Free Europe, Al-Qaeda’s support in Afghanistan is not limited to the TTP and has also extended to other militant groups, including Fitna al-Hindustan (BLA). An August 2026 UN report reportedly said Al-Qaeda was providing training to BLA militants.

Radio Free Europe also described AQIS as a key support structure for the Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan (IMP), saying the group received training and strategic assistance from AQIS.

In response to continued cross-border attacks, Pakistan has carried out airstrikes against targets across the Afghan border, Radio Free Europe reported.
