Iranian Strikes Push US Military Toward “Breakdown,” US Officials Say

Iran’s sustained retaliatory attacks on US military bases and warships across West Asia are reportedly placing growing pressure on American military readiness, according to US officials cited by The Intercept. Two officials familiar with US military operations in the region warned that depleted defensive-munitions stocks, rising casualties, maintenance problems, prolonged troop deployments and increasingly difficult logistics could eventually push the US military toward a “breakdown” in its ability to sustain the conflict.

The officials also said Iran’s use of drones and advanced ballistic missiles had challenged US air defenses across the region and left American forces in an increasingly precarious position. One official alleged that the Trump administration had underestimated Iran’s military capabilities, while another pointed to what they described as a lack of adequate planning for the conflict. Damage to key US military facilities across the region has reportedly added to the pressure on American forces.

According to the report, the mounting strain is also raising concerns over the Pentagon’s already stretched resources and budget. One US official characterized Iran’s reported attacks on American warships with ballistic missiles as a “go for broke” strategy aimed at imposing greater economic and military pressure on Washington ahead of the US midterm elections. The assessments underscore the growing challenges facing the US military as the confrontation continues.
