Charles Spencer Defends Claims About King Charles in New Diana Book

Charles Spencer has stood by the claims he made about King Charles in his upcoming memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister. Speaking to the BBC, Princess Diana’s brother insisted that his account of events was truthful and said he was confident about what he had written.

One of the major claims in the book relates to King Charles’ alleged reaction after Diana’s death in 1997. Spencer recalled receiving a phone call from the then-Prince Charles and claimed that the conversation became heated. According to Spencer, Charles allegedly told him, “We’ll forget her soon enough.”

Spencer also claimed that Charles sounded unusually pleased during the conversation. He compared Charles’ alleged reaction with the responses of other people who called him after Diana’s death, saying they were shocked and struggled to express their sympathy.

The claims have received a response from Buckingham Palace. While the Palace did not directly address the alleged words, it said that grief can influence a person’s memory, judgment and understanding of events, even many years later.

Spencer, however, rejected any suggestion that his memory was incorrect. During his BBC interview with Laura Kuenssberg, he said the words quoted in his book were exactly what Charles had said.

He also questioned the Palace’s response and suggested that it avoided directly denying his version of the conversation. Spencer explained that he had only spoken to Charles by phone twice in his lifetime, which made him particularly attentive to what was being said.

The memoir also includes another personal claim about Diana’s marriage. Spencer wrote that Diana wanted to divorce the then-Prince of Wales because she believed he was “in love with his valet.”

As per Spencer statements, Diana shared his belief with him in a private                 chat. He recalled being extremely shocked by what she told him, but assured her that she has his support. At the same time, he also warned that people might hold Diana responsible for bringing an end to the royal fairytale they had admired.

Spencer said Diana never out the identity of the staff member and that he did not ask her for additional information. He wrote that, regardless of the circumstances, Diana had reached the point where she felt her marriage and her hopes for it were over.
