PM Shehbaz, UN Secretary-General Discuss Middle East, Palestine and Terrorism

NEW YORK: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

During a wide-ranging meeting, the prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and the central role of the United Nations in promoting international peace, security and development.

Prime Minister Shehbaz also reiterated Pakistan’s strong commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and appreciated Secretary-General Guterres’ leadership in advancing the organisation’s work.

The two leaders exchanged views on major regional and international developments, including the situation in the Middle East.

Prime Minister Shehbaz stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving regional tensions and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to promoting peace and stability.

He also reiterated Pakistan’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and statehood.

The prime minister also drew the secretary-general’s attention to the rising trend of Islamophobia, particularly in Pakistan’s immediate neighbourhood.

He stressed the need for effective international action to address the growing prevalence of Islamophobia and promote tolerance and respect among communities.

The two leaders also discussed the situation in Afghanistan and concerns over what Pakistan describes as a sharp increase in terrorism emanating from Afghan soil.

Secretary-General António Guterres commended Pakistan’s role and strong voice at the United Nations, as well as its contribution to international peace and security.

He particularly appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediation efforts aimed at supporting a peaceful resolution of regional conflicts and promoting durable peace and stability.

The UN secretary-general also acknowledged Pakistan’s role and sacrifices in countering terrorism.

The meeting underscored Pakistan’s continued engagement with the United Nations on regional peace, Palestine, counterterrorism and other major international issues.
