Iran Takes US Flight Restrictions to UN Aviation Body and ICJ

Iran has filed a formal complaint with the International Civil Aviation Organization over U.S. sanctions affecting its aviation sector and says it has also taken the matter to the International Court of Justice.

Iranian Civil Aviation Organization chief Abolfazl Shiroudi said Tehran had submitted a formal protest to ICAO against the restrictions imposed on the country’s aviation industry.

According to Shiroudi, the move is aimed at defending what Iran considers the legitimate rights of its aviation sector and challenging the impact of U.S. sanctions.

He also said the Iranian government had coordinated with the Foreign Ministry to pursue the matter before the International Court of Justice.

Iran says the restrictions have affected its aviation industry and disrupted international flights to and from the country.

The dispute follows U.S. measures targeting Iran’s aviation sector, including restrictions on companies and entities involved in providing support to Iranian aviation.

After the restrictions took effect, several international airlines were forced to cancel or suspend flights involving Iran amid wider travel and operational restrictions.

Iran has argued that the sanctions are affecting both its aviation industry and passengers who rely on international air services.

The International Civil Aviation Organization is a United Nations agency responsible for developing international standards and rules for civil aviation, including areas related to safety, security and air navigation.

Tehran says it intends to continue pursuing the issue through international legal and diplomatic channels and is seeking relief from measures that it says are disrupting legitimate aviation operations.
