Trump Rejects Reports of Offering Iran Sanctions Relief

U.S. President Donald Trump has rejected media reports that his administration offered Iran relief from economic sanctions and the release of frozen Iranian assets in exchange for progress on Tehran’s nuclear programme.

Trump said in a post on Truth Social that he had made no such offer to Iran and described the report published by U.S. news outlet Axios as false.

He also accused Axios of publishing the report out of bias against him and said the story was being used to advance the agenda of his political opponents.

Trump called on Axios to withdraw what he described as “fake news” and criticised other media reports concerning the alleged offer.

The reports that prompted Trump’s response said the United States was prepared to consider easing economic sanctions on Iran and restoring access to frozen Iranian assets if Tehran made concrete progress on its nuclear programme.

Axios and CNN had cited unnamed U.S. officials as saying Washington was engaged in positive and constructive indirect discussions with Tehran through intermediaries.

The officials also indicated that any potential agreement would remain dependent on substantial progress over Iran’s nuclear activities, with the Trump administration maintaining its position on the issue.

Trump’s denial has added another layer of uncertainty to the ongoing diplomatic contacts between Washington and Tehran, particularly over the possible terms of any future understanding between the two sides.
