JD Vance Says Room for Deal With Iran Still Exists

US Vice President JD Vance has said there is still room for an agreement with Iran, but Tehran would need to meet its commitments and demonstrate its position through concrete actions.

Vance said the United States was assessing Iran’s actions rather than relying solely on statements as negotiations continue.

He indicated that developments over the next two months would be important in determining Washington’s approach toward Tehran.

Vance also addressed the situation surrounding Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, saying he believed Khamenei was alive but was not involved in the country’s day-to-day affairs. The comments were consistent with previous statements from senior US officials regarding his status.

The vice president’s remarks came as Washington and Tehran remained divided over the terms of a possible agreement.

Recent indirect negotiations, involving regional mediators including Qatar, have focused on Iran’s nuclear programme and the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump has rejected Iran’s latest proposal but has also said he expects further talks.

Vance said any future understanding with Tehran would depend on Iran taking steps that Washington considers consistent with its commitments.
