71% of Americans Disapprove of Trump’s Handling of Iran, AP-NORC Poll Finds

US Public Support for Iran War Hits Lowest Level: Poll
A new AP-NORC poll shows that 71% of Americans disapprove of President Donald Trump’s handling of Iran, while 69% say the war with Iran has not been worth fighting.
The findings come as the conflict remains a major foreign-policy issue in the United States and diplomatic efforts continue alongside military tensions between Washington and Tehran.
The survey, conducted from September 24 to 28 among 2,140 US adults, found that only a minority approve of Trump’s approach to Iran. The poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.
Economic concerns are also reflected in the findings. Around 65% of Americans said higher-than-usual prices are the result of Trump’s policies, although the poll also found a significant partisan divide on the issue. Among Republicans, 67% said higher prices were caused by factors beyond the president’s control.
The survey found that only 17% of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the cost of living, while 26% approve of his overall economic performance.
The polling comes as the Trump administration continues to face questions over its Iran policy, including the costs and objectives of the ongoing conflict. Recent diplomatic efforts involving US and Iranian officials and regional mediators have continued despite major differences between the two sides.
The poll provides a snapshot of US public opinion ahead of the November 2026 midterm elections. It does not, by itself, establish how voters will make their decisions in individual congressional races.
