PTI Policies Come Under Scrutiny as Transport Disruptions Put Karachi Port Under Pressure

05 October, 2026 11:54

Pakistan’s economic activity is facing growing disruption as Karachi Port, the country’s key commercial gateway, comes under increasing pressure following a slowdown in the movement of cargo towards Punjab and northern areas.

A large number of import and export containers have started accumulating at the port as freight transporters remain reluctant to move goods towards Punjab and the federal capital amid uncertainty over road access and the availability of vehicles.

The situation has raised concerns over the wider economic impact of political activity and transport disruptions, with PTI policies and its political strategy coming under scrutiny over their possible effects on trade and business activity.

Sources said the immediate cause of the transport crisis was the seizure of vehicles and containers by authorities in Islamabad as part of measures to prevent a political long march from reaching the capital.

According to the sources, Islamabad Police has taken more than 2,000 vehicles and containers into custody and placed them at different entry points.

Transport unions say the disruption has made the timely transportation of goods increasingly difficult, while vehicle owners are also facing losses running into millions of rupees.

The situation is also affecting the movement of cargo from Karachi, potentially delaying the supply of imported raw materials and other essential goods to markets and industries in Punjab and northern parts of the country.

Economic experts have warned that if the supply-chain disruptions are not resolved quickly, shortages of raw materials and essential commodities could emerge across the country.

They said prolonged disruption to the movement of goods could also put additional pressure on prices, with consumers already facing the impact of high inflation.

The developments have renewed concerns over the economic cost of political confrontation, particularly its potential impact on trade, transportation, businesses and ordinary consumers.
