ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has launched a series of initiatives to improve patient care, modernise medical infrastructure, strengthen clinical services and expand postgraduate training. According to hospital sources, the measures focus on streamlining the procurement of medicines and essential medical equipment, resolving pending administrative matters and ensuring uninterrupted supplies to inpatient wards and outpatient departments (OPDs).

The hospital is also equipping surgical units with essential instruments, specialised sutures and other consumables to ensure smooth clinical operations. With support from the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, PIMS is upgrading outdated electromedical equipment in General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Pulmonology, Renal Transplant Services and the Dialysis Unit. Tender documents for safety improvements and technical upgrades have progressed to the technical and financial evaluation stages, hospital sources said.

As part of its academic expansion, PIMS plans to introduce master’s degree programmes in Breast Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Hepatobiliary Surgery and Minimal Access Surgery under its Department of General Surgery. The proposed programmes will be affiliated with Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU) and are intended to expand specialised surgical training and strengthen postgraduate medical education.
