IRGC Says Container Ship Sank After Naval Mine Explosion in Strait of Hormuz

14 October, 2026 20:31

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy has claimed that a container ship carrying more than 2,500 containers exploded after striking a naval mine while attempting to navigate an unauthorized and dangerous route in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the IRGC Navy’s public relations office, the vessel caught fire and sank on Wednesday morning in the southern waters of the strait due to the intensity of the blaze.

The IRGC Navy urged local vessels and fishermen to exercise extreme caution while navigating the area, warning them to avoid collisions with containers floating in the water following the incident. The development comes amid a series of maritime incidents involving commercial vessels attempting to use routes that Tehran considers unauthorized.

On Monday, the IRGC reported that an oil tanker had struck a naval mine after disregarding warnings and attempting to navigate an unauthorized route through the strait. The incident followed two similar cases involving oil tankers in preceding days. The IRGC Navy also announced on October 9 that its forces had struck a liquefied petroleum gas carrier attempting to pass through an unauthorized route south of the area.
