Deadly Fire at Canadian Military Base Leaves Several Dead and Injured

Canadian broadcaster Global News reported, citing unnamed military sources, that at least seven people had been killed and dozens injured after a gas line or gas well was struck during a live-fire military training exercise. Base Wainwright is one of Canada’s busiest military training facilities. Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged a “serious incident creating a major fire” and expressed solidarity with the military personnel and others affected.
The scale of the emergency has also placed pressure on healthcare services in Edmonton. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported that Royal Alexandra Hospital had declared a Code Orange, a protocol activated to prepare for incidents involving large numbers of casualties. Emergency department physician Warren Thirsk warned that the influx of patients could overwhelm local healthcare facilities, describing the incident as a disaster of a scale experienced only once every 15 to 25 years.
