Parisians Wake Up to Protest Damage and Looted Shops

18 October, 2026 16:45

Paris residents and business owners woke up to damaged buildings, smashed shopfronts and looted stores following a wave of violence across France during demonstrations against conditions in schools and the rising cost of living. The protests, held on Saturday, saw unrest spread across several parts of the country, leaving businesses facing significant damage.

At least 1,200 people were arrested during the demonstrations, which the French government described as an “escalation in violence.” Shops were vandalised and goods stolen as clashes and disorder disrupted public life. For many shop owners, the morning after the unrest brought the difficult task of assessing losses and beginning clean-up operations.

Some business owners reported that the value of damaged property and stolen goods had reached €100,000, equivalent to approximately £85,000. BBC correspondent James Waterhouse reported from the streets of Paris, where damaged buildings and affected businesses reflected the aftermath of the unrest.
