Araghchi Says Strait of Hormuz Could Reopen Within Seven Days

19 October, 2026 08:37

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz could be restored within seven days if Iranian conditions are met, placing the decision on reopening the strategic waterway on the United States.

Araghchi said Iran remained ready for negotiations but would not abandon what it considers its legitimate rights under pressure or threats.

He maintained that maritime security could not be fully restored while US military threats and what Tehran describes as a blockade remain in place.

According to the Iranian foreign minister, Iran has conveyed a seven-day plan to the United States through Qatar. He also linked progress on the Strait of Hormuz to the implementation of an Islamabad memorandum of understanding, saying US military actions were creating obstacles to its implementation.

Araghchi stressed that Iran had participated in negotiations in good faith and remained prepared for dialogue. At the same time, he said military action had damaged Tehran’s confidence and that Iran would protect its sovereignty and national interests.

The Iranian foreign minister called for regional countries to address regional disputes collectively and increase security cooperation.

He also urged neighbouring states not to allow their territory to be used against one another and called for continued dialogue among members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

Iran’s position comes amid continuing tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes. The practical reopening of the waterway and the restoration of normal commercial traffic remain dependent on developments between Iran, the United States and regional countries.
