Afghan govt will release 100 Taliban prisoners this week.

 

The Afghanistan government will rellease them as part of peace deal signed between the United States and the Taliban.

US and Taliban signed deal to end nearly two decades of war in that country.


Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid caled it the first step towards ultimate exchange of 6,000 prisoners which the Afghan government and the Taliban held.

Earlier, a three-member Taliban team negotiated the prisoner exchange process with Afghan officials in Kabul yesterday.

 

Militant attack

On March 27, Afghan security forces killed 7 militants.

They aborted attack on their check post in Bala Murghab district.

According to the police, the clash occurred after a group of militants stormed security checkpoints in the area.

Political and economic crisis

Meanwhile, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani downplays US aid cut in televised speech.

In a televised speech, he said that US aid cut would not have an impact on the country’s key sectors and departments.

Ashraf Ghani  said we will try to fill the vacuum with the help of alternative resources.

He also renewed his call on Taliban to agree a ceasefire as the country facing challenges amid COVID-19 outbreak.

Earlier, AFP reported that Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and his rival Abdullah Abdullah showed no sign Tuesday of ending their bitter feud.

They didn’t resolve differences, even after it cost the impoverished nation $1 billion in US aid — with yet more on the line.

Meanwhile, the exasperated US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Kabul in a bid to resolve the standoff.
Abdullah proclaimed himself president despite Ghani officially winning last year’s controversial poll.
Pompeo ashed out at the their “failure” to come to an agreement.
He said the US would immediately cut $1 billion.
The US top diplomat also warned of pulling another $1 billion in 2021, with further cuts possible after that.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived in the Afghan capital Kabul on Monday.

His visit comes amid Coronavirus pandemic threat to the entire world but Pompeo chose to visit Afghanistan instead of dealing with COVID-19 related threats.
