Every 10 minutes, a woman is killed by a spouse or partner in world: report

A United Nations report revealed that every 10 minutes a woman is killed by a spouse, boyfriend or a relative around the world.

The report, based on available data from 107 countries, was jointly released by UN Women and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on the 25th International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

According to the report, there has been an alarming increase in the rate of murder of women worldwide as during the year 2023 a woman died every 10 minutes at the hands of a partner, spouse or a relative.

How many women were killed worldwide in 2023?

According to the report, about 85,000 women were killed last year, in this figure, about 60 per cent or more than 51,000 women were killed by their partner or some relative.

According to the report, the rate of killing of women worldwide is an average of 140 per day, where girls and women are most at risk of being killed at home.

On the other hand, men are 4 times more likely to be murdered than women, i.e. 80 per cent.
