NED University develops Pakistan’s first AI-powered driverless car
Karachi’s NED University of Engineering and Technology is making history by developing Pakistan’s first AI-powered driverless car.
This groundbreaking project is being carried out at the university’s National Centre for Artificial Intelligence (NCAI), one of nine research centers established by the federal government to boost innovation and technology in the country.
University engineers confirm that NED will be the first institution in Pakistan to create an AI-driven autonomous vehicle. To achieve this, a specialized electric vehicle (EV) has been imported from China and is currently being equipped with advanced AI tools. The first test drive is expected within six months.
Dr. Muhammad Khurram, an associate professor at NED and the project’s supervisor, is optimistic about the progress. He highlighted advancements in data processing and software development, which are essential for real-time vehicle control.
Two research students, Inzamam and Aleema, who are actively working on the project, explained that the vehicle integrates AI, robotics, and mapping to navigate Karachi’s complex traffic conditions.
The team has successfully tested algorithms for speed limits, object detection, and lane recognition in a virtual environment.
Currently in development, the driverless car is expected to become operational at the NED University campus within the planned timeline. This pioneering initiative is a major step toward AI-driven transportation in Pakistan, marking a significant achievement in the country’s technological landscape.
