In a landmark decision to enhance road safety and decrease traffic violations, the Karachi Commissioner has mandated a two-month ban on a range of illegal car modifications ,including number plates, pressure horns, tinted windows, flashlights, and other loud car accessories. This ban applies to the sale, distribution, and installation of illegal modifications across the city and will be in effect from April 8 to June 7, 2025.
The move was taken following a request made by the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic. According to the official notification, the illegal car modifications posed serious threats to public safety and excessive traffic violations.
The total ban attempts to regulate modifications and promote conditions of tougher compliance with Karachi traffic laws. The authorities stated that they will take strict action against violators and have authorized the Station House Officers (SHOs) to take legal action against violators who do not comply with the new restrictions.
This campaign is in line with the administration‘s attempts to create better road discipline and decrease the consequences of unauthorized vehicle modifications
In an additional move to improve road safety, the DIG Traffic has committed to introducing drug testing for drivers. This plan will identify and penalize those accused of driving under the influence, an increasingly concerning issue in the chaotic urban landscape of Karachi.
Drug testing should deter reckless driving as well as strengthen and improve the traffic management system in the city. By focusing on illegal number plates, pressure horns, tinted windows, flashlights, and hooters, the authorities also want to tackle the abuse of these accessories, which contribute to road mismanagement and accidents.
The plan is to create a two-month restriction order to restore order and protect the safety of the people of Karachi.
