Lahore’s free Emission Testing System (ETS) is expected to end by June 30, as the government prepares to transfer the service to private vehicle dealerships.
According to Secretary of the Environment Protection and Climate Change Department, Raja Jahangir Anwar, the ETS will soon be handled by authorized dealerships of various car and vehicle manufacturers in Lahore.
These dealerships will be equipped with the necessary ETS machines and trained personnel to conduct emissions tests. Once implemented, vehicle owners will have to pay Rs. 400 per test at these centers.
The department aims to increase the number of tested vehicles through this new system. Raja Jahangir Anwar stated, “Providing the service through authorized dealerships will improve efficiency and convenience for vehicle owners.”
Initially launched as a free service, the ETS operated with 20 centers in Lahore, each with three testing squads. However, long lines and delays revealed operational challenges.
With this shift to the private sector, the government hopes to streamline the process and improve enforcement as more vehicles undergo testing.
