Nagendran, currently the BJP’s legislature party leader, emerged as the sole nominee for the post, with his candidacy proposed by outgoing state chief K. Annamalai and endorsed by senior figures, including Union Minister L. Murugan and former Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan. From AIADMK Stalwart to BJP Leader
Nagendran’s political journey began with the AIADMK, where he served as a minister under former Chief Ministers J. Jayalalithaa and O. Panneerselvam between 2001 and 2006. A three-time MLA from Tirunelveli, he won consecutive elections in 2006 and 2011 on an AIADMK ticket before switching to the BJP in August 2017. His defection marked a wave of AIADMK leaders joining the BJP, and he swiftly rose through the ranks, becoming the party’s state vice president by July 2020.

Proven Electoral Credentials
In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, Nagendran secured his third victory from Tirunelveli, this time as a BJP candidate, defeating his DMK rival by 23,107 votes. His consistent electoral success earned him the role of BJP legislature party leader in the state Assembly, consolidating his influence within the party.
