Who is Thami Moyo? Gauteng Taxi Leader Shot Dead in Soweto Highway Attack

19 September, 2025 12:49

Gauteng National Taxi Alliance (GNTA) chairperson Thami Moyo was shot dead while driving along the Soweto Highway in Diepkloof. He was 58 years old.

According to police reports, Moyo’s car was blocked by two vehicles. The suspects opened fire, killing him on the spot. Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said the motive is still under investigation but may be linked to ongoing taxi violence in the province.

Who Was Thami Moyo?

Thami Moyo was the chairperson of GNTA and a respected figure in the South African taxi industry. He was known as a visionary leader who worked hard to bring unity and stability to the sector.

Colleagues described him as a man committed to creating a sustainable and inclusive future for taxi operators and passengers.

Reactions From Taxi Leaders

The news of Moyo’s murder has shocked the industry.

  • Santaco Gauteng chairperson Midday Mali said Moyo was more than a leader. He called him a comrade, counterpart, and unifier.

  • Santaco president Motlhabane Abnar Tsebe said his death is not just a loss for Gauteng but for the entire taxi industry.

  • Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mkhululeko Hlengwa also expressed their condolences.

They confirmed that Acting Police Minister Professor Firoz Cachalia has already set up an investigative team to hunt down the killers.

Taxi Violence in South Africa

The taxi industry in South Africa plays a vital role in public transport. However, it is often hit by violent disputes over routes and leadership.

In recent years, dozens of people have been killed in similar attacks. Officials say oversight and strict policing are needed to reduce such tragedies.

Call for Justice

Santaco leaders have urged law enforcement to act quickly. They believe bringing the perpetrators to justice will restore faith in communities that depend on taxis daily.

“His death robs us of a visionary who always believed in collective progress,” said Mali.
