Who is Claudio Valente? Brown University Shooting Suspect Found Dead
Providence/New Hampshire, December 19, 2025: Claudio Neves Valente, the suspect behind last weekend’s tragic Brown University shooting, has been found dead. Authorities confirmed he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a storage facility in New Hampshire on Thursday evening.
Background of Claudio Valente
Valente, 48, was a former Brown University graduate student and a Portuguese national. He studied physics at Brown from fall 2000 to spring 2001, according to university officials. Brown University President Christina Paxson said he had no current affiliation with the university.
Details of the Incidents
Authorities believe Valente fatally shot two students and injured nine others in a lecture hall on Brown’s campus last Saturday. Two days later, he allegedly killed Portuguese MIT professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro at his home.
Both Valente and Loureiro previously attended the same academic program in Portugal between 1995 and 2000, U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley confirmed.
Investigation and Death
Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez stated that Valente’s death appeared to be a suicide. Authorities are continuing to investigate the shootings to determine the motive and any other possible connections.
The incidents have left the Brown University community and the wider public in shock, as authorities continue their search for answers and support the victims’ families.
