Flour prices rise by Rs13 per kg in Karachi
Flour prices have increased in Karachi, with the price of fine flour and 2.5 number flour going up by Rs13 per kilogram.
According to Chairman of the Flour Mills Association, Junaid Aziz, the increase comes after wheat prices rose over the past 15 days. During this period, the price of 2.5 number flour increased from Rs119 per kg to Rs132 per kg.
He said the price of fine flour has now crossed Rs140 per kg. At the same time, the price of wheat has increased from Rs106 per kg to Rs118 per kg.
Junaid Aziz said the rise in wheat prices is the main reason behind the increase in flour prices. He added that the government should import wheat to control prices.
He said the sooner the government decides to import wheat, the more relief people will get. If the decision is delayed, wheat hoarders are likely to benefit instead.
According to him, Pakistan needs to import at least 3 to 4 million tons of wheat. He also said wheat should be imported according to the country’s needs so that local farmers do not suffer losses.
In Karachi, around 2 million to 2.2 million sacks of flour are used every month during summer. In winter, monthly wheat consumption increases to about 2.6 million sacks.
