Murree Schools Closed for Two Days Amid Heavy Rains and Landslides

Punjab Government May Extend School Holidays Until August 31 Due to Rain
Murree, August 19 — Authorities in Murree have announced a two-day closure of schools on Tuesday, August 19, and Wednesday, August 20, after continuous heavy rainfall triggered landslides and flooding in several areas.
The directive was issued by the Chief Executive Officer of the District Education Authority, citing safety concerns for students and staff. The local administration said the decision was necessary due to overflowing rivers, blocked roads, and the growing threat of cloudbursts in the hilly region.
Flooding and Landslides Reported
Torrential rains have caused rivers and canals to overflow in Kahuta GPO Chowk, Mall Road, and Galiyat, where landslides blocked the Murree-Abbottabad highway. Similar conditions were reported in New Murree, where the road to Sanj Morri was closed after mudslides and fallen trees.
Officials also warned tourists to avoid rivers and nullahs as water levels remain dangerously high. Residents have been urged to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel over the next 24 to 48 hours, as more rainfall is expected.
PDMA Issues Province-Wide Alert
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued a monsoon rain warning for several districts, including Murree.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia instructed all commissioners and deputy commissioners to remain on high alert. He noted that the current spell of monsoon rains is the seventh and strongest phase so far, raising the risk of flash floods, urban flooding, and cloudbursts in upper Punjab districts.
Departments including Health, Irrigation, Local Government, Construction & Communication, and Livestock have been placed on emergency footing. Citizens have been advised to follow precautionary guidelines and avoid flood-prone areas.
Cloudburst Concerns
Officials expressed serious concern about the possibility of a cloudburst in Murree and surrounding areas. If such an event occurs, authorities warned it could lead to sudden and dangerous flooding.
Local administration has already stationed emergency teams and rescue units in key points to respond quickly in case of any disaster.
