Karachi schools closed tomorrow amid heavy rains and flood threat
KARACHI – Tuesday, August 19, 2025: Rumors are circulating on social media that schools in Karachi will remain closed tomorrow due to heavy rains and the cyclone threat. However, fact-checking confirms that no official announcement has been made by the Sindh government or the education department regarding a holiday for Karachi schools.
Heavy showers hit several areas of Karachi on Tuesday, including Sharea Faisal, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, University Road, Malir Halt, Surjani Town, and Korangi. Rainwater inundated roads, disrupted traffic, and entered homes in low-lying areas. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast more rainfall till August 23, warning of possible urban flooding in Karachi and other Sindh districts.
According to PMD, the highest rainfall was recorded in Gulshan-e-Hadeed (75mm), followed by University Road (59mm) and Nazimabad (29mm). Areas like Korangi, Keamari, Airport, Orangi, and Gulshan-e-Maymar also received moderate rainfall.
Despite severe weather conditions, officials have not declared any school closure. A senior education department officer confirmed that schools will remain open as per schedule unless a formal notification is issued. Citizens are advised to follow official updates only, as false news is spreading on WhatsApp and Facebook.
Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah chaired an emergency meeting on Monday to review rain preparedness. He directed local bodies, traffic police, and administration to stay on high alert. Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab also briefed about drainage clearance at over 150 critical choke points.
Authorities have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy downpours and stay away from electric poles, low-lying areas, and underpasses. K-Electric confirmed temporary power cuts in flood-prone areas as a safety measure.
For now, schools in Karachi remain open, and any decision on closures will only come through official notification by the Sindh government. Parents and students are advised not to trust unverified social media claims.
