Punjab winter holidays extended? Check latest updates

Reports suggesting that the Punjab government might extend winter holidays for schools and colleges have caused confusion across the province, especially as cold weather continues.

However, the government has clarified that no such decision has been made.

Social Media Rumours

Speculation began circulating on social media and messaging apps, claiming that the harsh weather could lead to longer winter vacations. This made parents and students anxious, and many sought clarification from officials.

The confusion came amid severe winter weather warnings issued by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), advising citizens to stay careful during the cold spell affecting parts of the country.

Official Statement

On January 4, Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat dismissed the reports, calling them false and misleading. He confirmed that all public and private schools and colleges in Punjab will reopen as scheduled on January 12, 2026, and urged the public to rely only on official announcements.

Winter Vacation Schedule

The Punjab Education Department had announced winter vacations from December 22, 2025, to January 10, 2026 for all public and private schools.

Some private schools reportedly ignored the official schedule, sending WhatsApp messages asking students to return from January 6.

Action Against Violating Schools

The District Education Authority (DEA) in Lahore took action against private schools that reopened early. Three schools in Shahdara, Bedian Road, and Sabzazar were sealed, and their principals were summoned for questioning.

Officials warned that any private school violating the vacation schedule would face strict action. Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat reiterated that no school is allowed to open before the end of winter holidays, and CEOs of education departments will take immediate action if rules are broken.
