ATC rejects Imran Khan’s acquittal plea in GHQ attack case

27 January, 2025 21:27

An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi has dismissed the acquittal petition of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in the General Headquarters (GHQ) attack case, which is linked to the violent protests of May 9, 2023.
The petition for acquittal was filed under Article 265 of the Constitution.

The hearing took place at a makeshift court in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, where ATC Judge Amjad Ali Shah presided over the case.

Public Prosecutor Zaheer Shah presented the prosecution’s argument, stating that there was sufficient evidence against the accused.

He also noted that 12 witness statements had been recorded so far and emphasized that an acquittal request could not be considered while the trial was still ongoing.

After hearing the arguments, the ATC judge rejected the petition and adjourned the hearing.

Last month, the Rawalpindi ATC indicted Imran Khan and former interior minister Sheikh Rashid, along with 100 others, in connection with the GHQ attack case, which was filed at the R.A. Bazar Police Station. Imran Khan, along with other indicted leaders, has denied the charges.

The case includes over 143 accused individuals, with 23, including Zulfi Bukhari, Shahbaz Gill, and Murad Saeed, listed as fugitives. All accused individuals have been prohibited from traveling abroad.

A total of 70 PTI leaders have been accused of planning the May 9 protests and inciting supporters to attack military and government installations following the arrest of Imran Khan by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
