Just days after a tragic building collapse in Karachi’s Lyari area, which killed at least 27 people, another multi-storey residential building in Lyari’s Agra Taj area has been declared “unsafe”, prompting urgent evacuation orders.
SBCA and Officials Visit Site After Cracks Found
The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) and district administration inspected the building after reports of visible cracks in the structure, which houses 10 residential units.
Karachi’s District South Worst Affected
According to the SBCA, out of 578 unsafe buildings across Karachi, 456 are in District South. An internal report identified 107 dangerous structures in Lyari and the Old City Area alone. Other districts also have at-risk buildings: Central (66), Keamari (23), Korangi (14), East (13), Malir (4), and West (2).
Residents Resist Evacuation Orders
Despite warnings, many residents refused to leave the building. One resident said, “We are living in this building, we do not feel any danger.” Others demanded alternative accommodation first, asking, “Where were the institutions when the building was being constructed?”
Authorities Promise Compensation and Support
The District South deputy commissioner assured, “We have offered to shift the affected residents to a school,” and promised compensation from the builder. Action is also being taken against the builder, including a police case filed at Kalri Police Station.
Demolition Begins to Force Evacuation
To press for evacuation, officials demolished the rooftop water tank. The SBCA and police continue efforts to prevent another disaster and ensure resident safety.
