Govt considers increasing protected electricity limit to 300 units

Govt proposes power tariff adjustments and higher fixed charges
There’s some good news for electricity users in Pakistan. A new proposal may help reduce electricity bills for people who use less than 300 units of electricity each month.
Currently, if someone uses more than 200 units, they no longer qualify for the “protected” rate and have to pay much higher charges. Even crossing the limit by just one unit — using 201 units — can lead to an extra bill of around 5,000 rupees.
This issue was raised by members of the National Assembly, who informed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif about the burden on consumers.
Sources from the Ministry of Energy say that a proposal has been made to raise the protected limit from 200 to 300 units.
If this change is approved, only those who use more than 300 units will be charged at the higher, non-protected rate. This would allow people using up to 300 units to pay a lower, more affordable rate.
There is also talk of forming a high-level committee to review the protected and non-protected categories. This committee may suggest officially increasing the protected limit, giving relief to more households.
In many middle-class homes, electricity usage often goes above 200 units because of the number of family members and use of electrical appliances. But once the 200-unit mark is crossed, the bill becomes difficult to afford.
That’s why this proposal could be a big help to middle-class families, making electricity more affordable and easing their monthly expenses.
