Pakistan Navy Commissioned First HANGOR-Class Submarine PNS/M HANGOR in Landmark China Ceremony
The commissioning ceremony of the first HANGOR Class Submarine, PNS/M HANGOR, was held in Sanya, China, marking a major milestone in Pakistan’s naval modernization program. President Asif Ali Zardari attended the event as the Chief Guest, while Admiral Naveed Ashraf, Chief of the Naval Staff, was also present along with senior officials from Pakistan Navy and the People’s Liberation Army (Navy).
President Zardari highlighted that the induction of the HANGOR submarine represents a historic advancement for the Pakistan Navy and reinforces the country’s commitment to maintaining a strong, balanced, and credible defence capability. He emphasized that Pakistan possesses full capability to defend its sovereignty, safeguard maritime interests, and protect vital economic sea routes.
The Naval Chief underlined growing global concerns over disruptions at key maritime chokepoints, which continue to threaten international trade and energy security. He stressed that ensuring a stable maritime environment requires modern, technologically advanced naval forces. He further stated that HANGOR Class Submarines, equipped with advanced weapon systems, modern sensors, and Air Independent Propulsion technology, will play a crucial role in maintaining regional maritime stability and deterrence.

He also noted the historic legacy of the name HANGOR, recalling the 1971 achievement when the original submarine became the first since World War II to sink an enemy warship. The new PNS/M HANGOR is expected to continue this legacy while significantly enhancing Pakistan Navy’s operational capabilities.
The ceremony also reflected the strengthening strategic partnership between Pakistan and China. The Prime Minister of Pakistan, along with the Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, congratulated the nation and the Pakistan Navy on achieving this significant defence milestone.
