Barren Land in Bhakkar Transformed into Modern Agricultural Hub Under Green Pakistan Initiative

01 May, 2026 10:00

Barren and sandy land in Bhakkar has been turned into a productive agricultural and export centre. This was made possible through the Green Pakistan Initiative.

The project is being seen as a major step toward modernising Pakistan’s agriculture sector, expanding exports, and achieving self-sufficiency in food production.

Farm Ready in Just 60 Days

CEO of Pantera Limited, Furqan Ali Akhtar, said a 1800-acre modern agricultural farm in Bhakkar was developed in just 60 days. He called it a new example of what can be achieved with the right support and commitment.

He added that 13 central pivot irrigation systems have been installed on the farm. A 2.4 megawatt hybrid solar system is being used to power the irrigation. This ensures a reliable and sustainable water supply across the entire farm.

Sand Dunes to Green Fields

Chief Operating Officer of Pantera Farms, Farooq Saeed, shared more details about the transformation. He said that just four months ago, this land was covered with sand dunes standing 20 to 50 feet high. The land was completely uncultivable.

Within a short period, the entire area was levelled and prepared for farming. Out of the total 1800 acres, 1300 acres are now under active cultivation. Wheat and Rhodes grass are currently being grown on the farm. Rhodes grass is also being exported, adding an important revenue stream for the project.

Green Pakistan Initiative Made It Possible

Farooq Saeed said clearly that without the full support of the Green Pakistan Initiative, this project would not have been possible. He said GPI provided infrastructure support and resolved problems quickly as they arose.

He also said that through Green Agri Mall, quality seeds, fertilisers, and agricultural supplies were provided in a transparent and timely manner. This made a big difference in the early stages of the project.

First Hybrid Seeds Introduced in Pakistan

Farooq Saeed further said that through the Green Pakistan Initiative, collaboration with Chinese companies has made it possible to introduce the first hybrid seeds in Pakistan. This is a significant development for the country’s agricultural future.

The Bhakkar project is now being viewed as a model that can be replicated across other barren areas of Pakistan to boost food production and agricultural exports.
