Pakistan has achieved a major milestone in its maritime and trade sector with the arrival of its first fully transshipment cargo vessel capable of handling multiple types of freight at Karachi Port.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced on Friday the successful berthing of the vessel M.V. ERLIN at the KGTML terminal of Karachi Port Trust (KPT), describing it as a transformative moment for the country’s port operations.

In a statement, the minister said the development represents a significant shift in the country’s maritime logistics system. He stated, “In the past, Karachi Port handled only container transshipment. Today marks a historic shift, with M.V. ERLIN operating as a transshipment carrier for general cargo, break bulk, and vehicles,”

He further described the development as a “quantum leap” in Pakistan’s maritime capabilities, crediting recent reforms in the sector aimed at enhancing efficiency, improving trade competitiveness, and expanding business opportunities.

According to the minister, Pakistani ports are now fully capable of managing all forms of transshipment and transit cargo, including break bulk operations, supporting regional and international trade routes.

He added that this advancement could position Pakistan as an emerging maritime hub in the region, strengthening its role in global shipping networks and opening new avenues for economic growth.

The arrival of M.V. ERLIN is being seen as a key step in modernizing Karachi Port operations and expanding Pakistan’s logistics infrastructure to accommodate diversified cargo handling.
