NEPRA cuts electricity price by Rs1.99 per unit

09 June, 2026 15:10

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced a reduction in electricity prices by Rs1.99 per unit under the quarterly adjustment system.

According to the official notification, this cut applies to the January to March 2026 adjustment period. The relief will be given to consumers for three months, from June to August 2026.

NEPRA said the same reduction will also apply to K-Electric consumers, ensuring uniform relief across the country. Overall, electricity users are expected to get a total benefit of around Rs67.17 billion.

The regulator explained that the change is part of its routine quarterly process, which adjusts electricity prices based on fuel costs and power purchase expenses. This latest reduction reflects changes in generation costs and aims to pass on benefits to consumers.

In a related development, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to speed up the privatisation of electricity distribution companies (DISCOs). He stressed that the process should be transparent and completed on time.

During a review meeting, the prime minister said privatising loss-making state-owned companies remains a key government priority. He also called for a strong regulatory system after privatisation to ensure better oversight and improved service.

Officials informed the meeting that the first phase of privatisation will include IESCO, GEPCO, and FESCO. They said expressions of interest have already been published in newspapers locally and internationally, and the privatisation committee has approved the plan.

They added that investor roadshows will begin this month, with sessions planned in countries including Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and China to attract foreign investment.
