Punjab Government to End Free Public Transport Services From June 13, 2026

12 June, 2026 12:48

The Punjab government has decided to discontinue its free public transport services across the province, with the change coming into force from Saturday, June 13, 2026.

From this date, commuters will once again need to buy tickets to use the Orange Line Train, Metro Bus, Speedo Bus, and Green Electric Bus services.

The free travel scheme had been launched by the provincial government as part of a wider relief package designed to ease financial pressure on the public amid increasing fuel costs and global economic instability triggered by the Iran conflict.

Originally planned for one month, the facility was later extended beyond its initial timeframe.

With this latest move, the earlier fare system for the Orange Line Train, Metro Bus, Speedo Bus, and Green Electric Bus will be reinstated starting June 13.

Official data shows that close to 800,000 commuters were benefiting from the free service every day. Among them, roughly 290,000 people used the Orange Line Train daily, while over 100,000 passengers travelled free on the Metro Bus.

The relief package had also extended to the farming community, with growers receiving a diesel subsidy of “Rs100 per litre per acre” to help reduce cultivation expenses.

Motorcycle owners were similarly supported, with registered users granted a subsidy of “Rs100” on up to 20 litres of fuel.
