PDMA issues warning over glacial flood threat in KP

13 June, 2026 19:08

PESHAWAR: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert to deputy commissioners of several northern districts due to the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and flash floods.

The alert has been sent to officials in Upper and Lower Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir, Swat, Upper and Lower Kohistan, and Mansehra.

According to PDMA, rising temperatures and recent rainfall have increased the melting of glaciers and snow in these areas. This has raised the risk of sudden flooding from glacial lakes and fast water flow in rivers and streams.

The authority warned that areas in Swat, Chitral, Dir, Kohistan, and Mansehra could face glacial lake outbursts. It also said that landslides, falling rocks, and damage to roads may occur in vulnerable regions.

Low-lying areas could also experience sudden flooding due to rising water levels in rivers and streams.

Local administrations have been directed to closely monitor sensitive locations and issue timely warnings to residents in high-risk areas. They have also been instructed to keep emergency supplies ready and ensure evacuation plans are in place if needed.

The PDMA has advised people to avoid rivers, streams, and fast-flowing water during the ongoing heatwave. Tourists and travellers have also been urged to be careful and avoid unnecessary travel in risky areas.

Rescue 1122, the National Highway Authority, and other departments have been placed on alert to respond quickly in case of any emergency.
