Pakistan’s UN Warning: Why Peacekeeping Fails Without Long-Term Peacebuilding

26 June, 2026 11:21

Pakistan noted that merely preserving the peace is insufficient for lasting stability; true success requires working toward long-term stability. Rather than waiting, rebuilding local communities needs to be our top priority right from the start. Shifting from active peacekeeping to sustainable, and encouragement locally compelled headway strains unaffected political will, sufficient financial resources, and consistent support from global associates.

Speaking at a UN General Assembly debate, Pakistan’s UN Ambassador, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, noted that it has been 20 years since the UN Peacebuilding Commission was set up to help war-torn countries recover and avoid falling back into violence.

“Right now, it feels like there is less peace to protect and even less being built. Simultaneously, everyone is struggling over decrease resources,” the Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said.

“We need to take a serious, big-picture look at things if we want to actually deliver on our promises, he said.”

He emphasized that peace isn’t a single isolated moment. It is a continuous journey that goes from stopping wars before they start, to negotiating peace, keeping the peace, and finally helping societies recover and rebuild. All of these steps rely on each other.

Ambassador Ahmad received the results of a recent 2025 review on UN peacebuilding efforts. He called for a tougher prominence on letting local nations lead their own upgrading struggles, generating solider bonds among unlike UN groups, and guaranteeing recovering solidarity across the entire UN system.

He repeated everyone to stay attentive on the significant aim: aiding nations end struggles, keep the peace, and avoid forthcoming wars. He assured that Pakistan would keep working together with other nations to make this happen.

Finally, the Ambassador praised the UN Peacebuilding Fund, noting that real-world examples show how much of a difference quick, flexible funding can make. As one of the top countries providing troops for UN missions, and a founding member of the commission, Pakistan has seen firsthand that true safety only lasts when you combine security with rebuilding institutions, healing communities, and jumpstarting the economy.
