Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting in Islamabad to review the restructuring of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research and ongoing reforms in Pakistan’s agriculture sector. He directed that a comprehensive national agriculture policy be formulated soon in consultation with all provinces.
During the meeting, the prime minister also ordered the establishment of an apex forum for agriculture to ensure effective implementation of innovation and development plans. He said the forum would hold monthly meetings to monitor progress on key initiatives aimed at modernizing the sector.
Officials briefed the prime minister on ongoing reforms, including the pilot production of multi-grain flour at the National Agricultural Research Centre and the development of an artificial intelligence-based mobile application to help farmers identify and manage crop pests and diseases. The briefing also noted that the National Seed Policy and National Agricultural Biotechnology Policy have recently been approved to strengthen the sector’s long-term growth.
