Government Unveils Phased Strategy for Transition to Interest-Free Financial System

01 July, 2026 13:40

The government has released a comprehensive strategy outlining a phased transition to an interest-free financial system in Pakistan. According to the plan, the shift will be implemented gradually to safeguard financial stability and ensure the economy does not face major disruptions during the transition.

The Ministry of Finance’s report, titled Strategy for Pakistan’s Financial System Beyond 2027, states that the successful implementation of an interest-free financial system after 2027 will depend on addressing several key challenges and risks. The report emphasizes the need for careful planning to maintain economic stability throughout the process.

According to the report, the proposed transition is based on the 2022 ruling of the Federal Shariat Court and the constitutional framework following the 26th Amendment. However, the government maintains that the move toward an interest-free financial system will be gradual in order to minimize any potential adverse impact on the country’s economy.
