Pakistan Fully Supports Saudi Arabia’s Security, Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity: Asim Iftikhar

NEW YORK: Pakistan has reaffirmed its full support for Saudi Arabia’s security, sovereignty and territorial integrity, with Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Asim Iftikhar saying attacks by the Houthi militia constitute a violation of the Kingdom’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Addressing an emergency session of the UN Security Council on attacks by the Houthi militia against Saudi Arabia, Asim Iftikhar said Riyadh had the legitimate right to take necessary measures to protect its citizens, residents and national assets.

He said Pakistan viewed the situation in Yemen as having entered an extremely serious and dangerous phase and expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security environment.

The Pakistani envoy also voiced concern over attacks by the Houthi militia against commercial vessels in the Red Sea, saying threats to maritime navigation remained a serious regional and international concern.

Asim Iftikhar stressed the need to prevent further escalation in Yemen while keeping space open for diplomacy.

He said Pakistan supported a UN-led, Yemeni-owned political process aimed at finding a sustainable solution to the conflict.

Pakistan also called for greater international efforts to prevent further instability and promote dialogue among the parties involved.

The Pakistani ambassador said Islamabad remained concerned about divisions within the UN Security Council and the resulting deadlock, which he said had also affected the functioning of subsidiary bodies of the Council.

He expressed hope that member states would demonstrate unity, recognise their responsibilities and work collectively to overcome the challenges facing international peace and security.

Asim Iftikhar said Pakistan would continue its efforts to advance broader objectives of peace and security both within the region and beyond.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to supporting diplomatic efforts and international cooperation aimed at reducing tensions and promoting stability in Yemen and the wider region.
