KARACHI: Police have identified Humayun, the brother-in-law of the deceased woman’s husband, as the main accused in the Surjani Town family murder case, DIG Karachi West Irfan Baloch said on Thursday.

The bodies of a woman and her three children were found inside their home in Sector 7-D, Surjani Town, on Monday night.

According to police, all four victims had head injuries caused by a sharp-edged weapon and a heavy object.

Addressing a press conference, DIG West said Humayun had previously lived in the victims’ house as a tenant for around one and a half years.

Police said Humayun arrived at the house at around 2:30pm, knowing that the woman’s husband was not present.

According to Irfan Baloch, Humayun had been harassing the woman and allegedly attempted to assault her.

A nearby child began crying during the incident, after which Humayun allegedly picked up the child and struck her against a wall, the DIG said.

The woman’s two other children returned home from a madrassa at around 3pm.

Police said Humayun opened the door for them and subsequently killed both children.

According to the DIG, Humayun later washed himself and the bloodstained iron rod in the bathroom before leaving the house at around 6pm.

Irfan Baloch said a female neighbour told investigators that she was present at the house when Humayun arrived.

The DIG said Humayun attempted to make the killings appear to be part of a robbery, but police ruled out robbery during their initial examination of the crime scene.

Investigators are continuing to examine the sequence of events, collect forensic evidence and establish the complete circumstances surrounding the killings.

Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar had taken notice of the incident and sought an immediate and detailed report from SSP West.

The home minister directed police to investigate the case from all angles, collect evidence from the crime scene and determine the motive behind the killings.

He also ordered immediate action if evidence regarding the involvement of any individual emerged and directed officials to keep him informed about developments in the investigation.

Police have detained Humayun as the main accused, while further investigation and legal proceedings are continuing to establish the full circumstances of the case.
