Australia Eliminated as Zimbabwe Secure Historic Super 8 Spot in T20 World Cup
PALLEKELE: In a major upset for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Australia has been officially knocked out of the tournament during the group stage. Zimbabwe secured their historic qualification for the Super 8s on Tuesday after their final Group B match against Ireland was abandoned due to persistent rain.
The washout resulted in both teams being awarded one point each. This took Zimbabwe’s total to five points—a tally mathematically out of reach for Australia, who can only achieve a maximum of four points even if they win their final game against Oman.
Australia’s exit follows a disappointing campaign where they managed only one win in three matches, suffering a shock defeat to Zimbabwe and a heavy loss to co-hosts Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe emerged as the group’s surprise package, securing two victories and remaining unbeaten through the group stage. They now join Sri Lanka as the two teams advancing from Group B to the next round.
