Sri Lanka’s Thirimanne hospitalized after car crash

Former Sri Lanka captain Lahiru Thirimanne has been hospitalised after a serious head-on collision near in Anuradhapura, local media report on Thursday.

The exact nature of the former batter’s injury is not understood, but he is reportedly in stable conditions at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital.

Another, passenger present is the car at the time of the accident is also receiving care at the same hospital.

Thirimanne is understood to have been on pilgrimage when the accident occurred.

His car had crashed into a lorry traveling in the opposite direction.

The former captain played 44 Test matches, 127 ODIs and 26 T20Is for the Islanders. He represented Sri Lanka in three T20 World Cups, and was part of the 2014 winning squad.

He also played two ODI World Cups.

The last of his international appearances was in March 2022. He retired from international cricket in July 2023, calling time on a 13-year career.
