Apple’s new iPhone charger sets a benchmark in charging tech
Alongside the iPhone 17 launch, Apple also introduced a new charger that brings a global first — the Apple 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max. This is the world’s first charger to support the new USB PD 3.2 AVS protocol.
What Makes It Special?
AVS (Adjustable Voltage Supply) lets the charger adjust its power more precisely to match a device’s needs. This means:
Faster and more efficient charging
Less wasted power
Better battery health and safety
Normally, charging slows down as the battery fills up. With AVS, the charger fine-tunes its output, cutting down overall charging time.
How It Works
Although branded as a 40W charger, Apple says it can push up to 60W power for short bursts. In real tests, it sustained 60W for around 18 minutes, which is enough to give iPhones a quick boost but not powerful enough to run a MacBook Pro for long. That’s why Apple markets it as “40W with 60W Max” instead of a true 60W charger.
Fast Charging for iPhone 17
Apple says the new $39 Dynamic Power Adapter can charge the iPhone 17 up to 50% in just 20 minutes. This makes it the official fast charger for the new iPhone lineup.
Third-party brands are also expected to launch their own USB PD 3.2 AVS-compatible chargers soon, which might give users more options in the future.
