WhatsApp Plus launch in Pakistan raises questions about Meta’s fintech plans

30 May, 2026 13:05

Meta has officially launched paid subscription plans for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp around the world. The company has also announced that new subscription plans for AI users, creators, and businesses will be introduced in the future.

Facebook Plus and Instagram Plus are priced at $3.99 per month globally, while WhatsApp Plus costs $2.99 per month. In Pakistan, Meta has reduced the prices using a purchasing-power model, bringing the cost down to around $0.82. WhatsApp Plus will cost PKR 229 per month in Pakistan.

Meta confirmed that these new plans will exist alongside Meta Verified and will not replace it.

What Each Plan Offers

Facebook Plus and Instagram Plus provide extra features such as advanced Story insights, including rewatch counts. Users can create unlimited audience lists, extend Stories beyond the 24-hour limit, preview Stories before posting, search viewer lists, and publish posts without showing them in followers’ feeds.

Subscribers also get additional features like Super Heart reactions, custom app icons, and custom profile fonts.

Meta said the subscription service is aimed at users who want more features from their social media experience. The company also sees subscriptions as a way to expand revenue beyond advertising.

WhatsApp Plus focuses mainly on personalization. It offers custom ringtones, new themes, different app icons, sticker packs, and list customization. Users can also pin up to 20 chats instead of three. Meta is also offering a one-month free trial for the service.

The company emphasized that messaging, calls, and end-to-end encryption will remain free for all users. WhatsApp Plus does not include extra storage or an AI assistant. Meta plans to eventually bring all these services together under one brand called “Meta One”.

Discussing the future of WhatsApp, one LinkedIn user commented:

“They’ve already rolled it out for whatsapp business. You need to pay to send a message in your own broadcast lists. Tbh with the rise in AI and the true cost of digital tools especially like this, businesses will have to reevaluate costs and margins and eventually pricing. It’s like a subsidy is being taken away. But insane revenue for whatsapp because no one ever really built an alternative.”

The Numbers Do Not Add Up to Stickers

Meta believes subscriptions could become an important part of its business strategy. Even if only a small percentage of WhatsApp users subscribe, the company could generate significant revenue.

However, analysts say the main goal may not be sticker sales or cosmetic features. Instead, Meta appears to be testing whether users are willing to pay for services inside apps they already use and trust. The company is also building payment systems that could support larger plans and services in the future.
