Ryanair Jet Aborts Landing in Tenerife Amid Fierce Storm Winds
A Ryanair flight faced a dramatic mid-air ordeal after being forced to abort its landing at Tenerife South Airport due to hazardous storm conditions, according to footage shared by Spanish air traffic controllers.
The incident took place last Thursday when the passenger jet, while attempting to land at the busy Spanish holiday hub, began swaying dangerously from side to side — a moment captured on video from the airport’s control tower.
Controllers later explained the aborted landing was caused by a “wind shear-related glitch,” a sudden shift in wind speed or direction that can destabilize aircraft during landing. Reacting promptly, the pilot executed a standard “go-around” — a maneuver where the aircraft climbs back into the sky instead of completing the landing.
Spain’s weather authority, AEMET, confirmed that adverse weather disrupted operations across the Canary Islands, including airports in Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Several aircraft reportedly missed their approaches throughout the day, affected by wind shears, strong tailwinds, and shifting runway conditions.
Air traffic controllers took to social media, explaining that such wind shear incidents require immediate pilot notification and pre-published missed approach procedures are followed. Controllers then coordinate with the crew, who may opt to try landing again, divert, or hold in the air.
The Ryanair flight ultimately landed safely, and authorities confirmed that no injuries or serious incidents occurred. Controllers added that several similar disruptions were logged that day due to the intense weather system affecting the region.
