Bee Swarm Injures 24 in France, Three in Critical Condition After Hornet Attack

Emergency services lined the street after the incident in Aurillac, France
A peaceful Sunday morning in Aurillac, France, turned chaotic when a swarm of bees attacked people in the town centre, leaving 24 injured and three people in critical condition.
One of the victims, a 78-year-old woman, was stung 25 times. Emergency services rushed to Avenue de la République, just outside the Grand Hôtel de Bordeaux, where the bees had swarmed.
What Happened?
According to local reports, the bees became aggressive after their rooftop hive was disturbed by Asian hornets, a known threat to bee colonies. The unexpected disturbance sent the bees into panic, swarming onto the street below.
“The bees had never acted this way before,” said a local beekeeper, who was called in to calm the situation.
Emergency Response
Police and firefighters quickly arrived at the scene and created a safety zone. Paramedics treated victims, including one woman who went into cardiac arrest but was revived by emergency workers.
All injured were taken to Henri Mondor Hospital for care. Officials confirmed that the three people in serious condition had bee allergies.
Mayor Responds
Mayor Pierre Mathonier praised first responders, saying: “Thanks to the quick action of police, firefighters, and paramedics, many people were protected from further harm.”
He confirmed that the bee hives had been on the hotel roof for over 10 years, and this was the first incident of its kind.
What’s Next?
Officials say the bee colony may be relocated or removed entirely from the city centre to avoid future problems.
A local spokesperson added: “The situation is now under control. Residents and visitors are safe.”
