Trump snubbed as Nobel Peace Prize goes to Maria Corina Machado

10 October, 2025 14:05

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, announced by the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo. The decision drew global attention, especially as U.S. President Donald Trump was once expected by some supporters to be a contender for the prize.

Machado was honored for her long-standing fight for democracy in Venezuela and her peaceful efforts to bring political change to a country facing deep crisis.

A Symbol of Democratic Courage

Committee Chairman Jørgen Watne Frydnes described Machado as “a brave defender of the people’s democratic rights.” He praised her for keeping the “flame of democracy alive amidst darkness.”

Machado has spent over two decades pushing for free elections, choosing ballots over violence despite threats and intimidation from the current regime.

Work in a Dangerous Environment

Political activism in Venezuela remains highly risky. Many opposition voices have faced arrests, exile, or violence. Yet, Machado continued her work, becoming a central figure of hope for millions of Venezuelans seeking peaceful change.

Supporters in Latin America celebrated her victory, saying it brings international focus back to Venezuela’s struggle for freedom.

Historic Moment for Venezuela

With this award, Machado receives a gold medal, a Nobel diploma, and 11 million Swedish kronor (around $1.16 million). She is the first Venezuelan opposition leader to receive such global recognition.

While Trump’s supporters reacted with disappointment, the Nobel Committee made it clear — this year’s prize is dedicated to nonviolent resistance and democratic values.
