what is Smog and how to be protected from Smog

The term “smog,” is a combination of the words “smoke” and “fog”. Smog is a type of severe air pollution. This air pollution is a combination of numerous toxic effluents from industrial and residential activities.

The smog in Lahore are vehicle emissions, industrial pollution, fossil-fuel-fired power stations, waste-burning, and coal burned by thousands of brick kilns spread over the region. These are all contributors to the problem.

What does Smog contains

The smog elements, or pollutants, that make up smog are dust, pollen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, Sulphur oxides, ammonia gas, smoke m other chemicals, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and Tropospheric Ozone.

The Health diseases Smog causes 

The smog causes asthma, Bronchitis,Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD),Cardiovascular Issues,pneumonia, Immune System Disorders puts people at risk for lung cancer, heart attacks, stroke and in extreme cases, premature death.

How to be safe from smog

 

  • Wear a mask, constantly wash your hands and Stay hydrated
  • Run an air-purifier (if possible)
  • Avoid being outside near high-traffic areas to reduce your exposure avoids densely populated or crowded areas
  • Take rest breaks in the shade and avoid doing intense outdoor work
  • Avoid driving and smoking to reduce your carbon output
  • If you have asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, have your inhaler with you at all times. Keep your doctor’s number handy in case your illness worsens 
  • It is important to note that pollution affects everyone differently, and some people are more vulnerable to its detrimental effects
  • On smoggy days, persons with asthma, children, and the elderly should take extra precautions
  • Be Informed – Check daily air-quality alerts
  • Drink plenty of water and constantly wash your hands
