Trump says will cut funding for educational institutions that allow protests

05 March, 2025 08:09

US President Donald Trump has announced the closure of all federal funding of colleges, schools or universities that allow protests in the United States.

Trump has said, in a statement, that funding of educational institutions that allow illegal protests will be stopped. Protesters will be imprisoned or deported, while US citizens will be permanently expelled or arrested from institutions.

President Trump has been criticizing the demonstrations against Israeli attacks on Gaza in American schools, colleges and universities.

He signed an executive order in January ordering the expulsion of students who participated in the protests.

Such pro-Palestinian demonstrations were held around the world, and in the United States and have constitutional protection through the First Amendment.

US human rights groups say colleges should respond strongly to the illegal measures. Also, even if there is an illegal protest in the college, the president does not have the authority to take unilateral steps to withhold federal funds.

However, in the Trump administration, the education minister claims that Jewish students studying in American universities have been facing harassment for a year. They have declared the pro-Palestinian camps illegal on their own.

President Trump did not say what he meant by the illegal protests, but the Trump administration has set up a task force that will visit the 10 universities where pro-Palestinian demonstrations have been held.
