Donald Trump Slams Elon Musk Over Federal Subsidies, Suggests DOGE Investigation

01 July, 2025 11:31

U.S. President Donald Trump reignited his public feud with billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk. In a late-night post on his platform Truth Social, Trump criticized Musk for allegedly benefiting from massive federal subsidies and hinted that the federal watchdog group DOGE should investigate the money Musk’s companies have received.

The tension resurfaced after Musk voiced strong opposition to Trump’s economic bill, calling it reckless and blaming it for increasing the U.S. federal deficit. Musk also announced plans to form a new political party aimed at holding lawmakers accountable. He vowed to campaign against Republicans who say they support budget cuts but vote for high-spending bills.

In response, Trump posted, “Elon Musk knew, long before he so strongly endorsed me for President, that I was against the EV Mandate. Electric cars are fine, but not everyone should be forced to own one.”

Trump claimed Musk has benefited more from federal subsidies than any other individual in history. He suggested that without government support, Musk might have to shut down Tesla and SpaceX. “No more rocket launches, satellites, or electric car production,” Trump added. “Our country would save a fortune.”

He further said, “Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!”

Trump’s comments come after Musk criticized government subsidies for oil and gas companies under Trump’s policies, while electric vehicle incentives are now facing cuts. This disagreement signals a growing political divide between the two influential figures, who once shared mutual support.

Musk has not yet responded to Trump’s latest remarks. However, his recent political statements suggest he may play a more active role in upcoming elections — possibly even funding his own candidates.

This developing story adds another twist to the complicated relationship between big tech billionaires and American politics.
